Welcome to Secondary
OCAC Suzhou Secondary division began in August 2018 with 138 students & 23 faculty and is now in its second year with 385 students & 53 faculty, a growth of 179%! The Diploma Programme has been fully authorized by the IB, while the MYP is in the “candidate phase” of authorization and working toward full authorization in the fall of 2020.
In Grades 6-9, we follow the Chinese National Curriculum within the MYP approach to teaching and learning. The Grade 10 programme is an in-house designed hybrid curriculum, and Grades 11 and 12 follow the IB Diploma Programme. Pastoral care is an important feature of student life in the Secondary school, and to promote well-being and a balanced lifestyle, we offer an after-school Enrichment programme led by students, teachers, and outside providers, as well as a full athletics programme.
We will continue to reflect on our programme and plan for improvements and opportunities for our students to thrive and succeed in their educational journey both here in Suzhou and beyond.
Arriving in August of 2018 with a new secondary team, we are putting in a solid foundation of academic rigor that meets the demands of the local education authority and the IB Middle Years Programme & Diploma Programme. Our strong curriculum content is enriched by providing students with experiential learning opportunities within a dual-language environment and supported by a strong pastoral team that addresses student and staff well-being. I enjoy and look forward to working with a team of local and international educators who are very keen on “building” a high-quality school that aspires to be a model of Chinese International education both in Suzhou and greater China.
In my time with OCAC Suzhou, the Secondary school has experienced rapid growth. Throughout the growth, we, as a community, have been working hard to support our growing student numbers. This year has been exciting for me because it is the first year of the Diploma Programme. As a community, we are multi-cultural, respectful, and internationally-minded.
I look forward to the years ahead and continuing to build upon the foundation that we have laid in the past two years.
In our belief that pastoral care is most effective when there is a strong partnership between parents and our school, we work hard to communicate with new and existing parents. This is achieved through our parent-led lectures, clear two-way communication between all, and frequent communication throughout the school year from grade level teachers, coordinators, and school leaders.
Our school’s vision is at the heart of what we do in MYP - Chinese Origins, Global Originality. We also focus on developing well-rounded Chinese citizens, with a strong emphasis on enhancing student character traits via the IB Learner Profiles and on the Socialist Core Values.
In the DP, students have the choice to elect High-Level or Standard Level Classes. Through the philosophy of TOK, students are challenged to explore the nature of knowledge and articulate critical reflections. Students further develop their creative thinking, physical activity, and community service through our CAS program. At the end of their learning journey, students will write an independent research essay, known as the Extended Essay (EE), that embodies intensive in-depth writing according to the IB’s highest standards.
Together, through international mindedness and guidance from the Learner Profile attributes, our students are enabled to be innovative and creative in the way they do their courses. We look forward to seeing your child, join an innovative and forward-thinking DP at OCAC Suzhou.
The Secondary School has organized many student workshops this semester. Teachers carefully select the topic for each workshop and offer solutions to important questions about the different stages of student growth. Workshops are great opportunities for students to learn and grow, and they are also great opportunities for parents to learn with their children. One workshop in particular, “How to learn effectively,” helped students learn how to schedule their learning tasks/exams every day, track their homework status, make plans and manage their time efficiently. The self-management and effective learning skills taught in the workshop will be a life-long benefit to students, which will enable them to finish their learning tasks on time. My experience is that OCAC teachers aim to develop students’ abilities through student agency and prepare them for future success in life beyond the classroom. I have a deep appreciation for the excellent educators at OCAC.
My child entered Grade 8 this past September, his second year at OCAC Suzhou. During this period, my child has shown significant changes both physically and mentally. His growth was so rapid that it caught us off guard and we felt that we did not have enough experience to deal with it. Luckily, to help us navigate through this transition, the school provides support through their Advisory Program. After the first lesson, “New environment, New Start”, my child could not wait to share with us what he learned. During the lesson, students were introduced to topics, such as adapting to the new school life, building relationship effectively, protecting themselves, respecting teachers and learning to live and collaborate with others. I believe that my child benefited from this program and we were happy to see his progress. We would like to thank the school for arranging this timely lesson at the beginning of the semester.
Most of OCAC Suzhou students will live and study abroad in the future. Therefore, students must be trained in safety awareness, skills and habits before they travel to live in a different country. The Advisory Program enables them to become self-disciplined and stress-tolerant individuals who can adapt quickly to living and learning abroad. This is a forward-looking and effective program that positively influences students’ character traits. This kind of education at school is far more effective than parents nagging at home.
The second lesson is about academic integrity and time management. Those regular training sessions will definitely benefit my child for the rest of his life.
